Why We Will Never Show You Your Trust Score

We built a sophisticated trust engine. Then we hid it from you - completely and deliberately. Here is why that decision is the most important one we made.

A few months ago, a founder I respect asked me a question that has stayed with me. We were talking about Match It Up™ - about how we verify professional identities, score trust, compute match quality. I was walking him through the architecture, and at some point he stopped me and said: "If you can tell me how trustworthy someone is - why would you not just show me the number?"

It is a completely reasonable question. We have the data. We have the model. We have a composite professional trust score - computed from verified signals, weighted by lifecycle stage, adjusted for context - sitting right there in our database, ready to be displayed. We chose not to show it. Not because we could not. Because we are convinced it would break the very thing we are trying to build. This is the story of why.

The Problem With Showing Scores

Think about what happens the moment a trust score becomes visible to users on a professional networking platform. First, people optimise for it. Not for the behaviours the score was designed to reflect - but for the score itself. If you show someone their trust number is 74 and their colleague's is 82, they will immediately ask: what do I have to do to get to 82? And the answer to that question, in most systems, is game it. Send more connection requests. Reply faster. Click more endorsements. Do whatever the algorithm is watching - whether or not it reflects genuine professional reliability.

We have seen this play out on every platform that has ever made its engagement metrics visible. LinkedIn connection counts. Twitter follower numbers. Instagram verification ticks. The moment you surface the score, the score becomes the product. And the behaviour the score was measuring quietly disappears.

Second - and this is the part that matters most for professional networking - visible scores create social anxiety that poisons the very relationships you are trying to form. Imagine opening a networking platform and the first thing you see next to every person's name is a number. 61. 88. 43. You have not had a single conversation with any of them. But you have already made a judgement. You will not message the 43. You will feel inadequate next to the 88. You will spend more time wondering about your own score than thinking about who you actually want to connect with.

That is the opposite of what a professional network should do.

What We Built Instead

The Match It Up™ Trust Engine is real. It computes a composite score for every user using three signal types - verified credentials, behavioural patterns, and network context. It weights those signals differently depending on whether you are a new user still establishing your presence or a long-standing member with a track record. It propagates trust through your network graph, with careful limits to prevent inflation. None of that is visible to you.

What you see instead are three things. A tier badge - Verified, Trusted Node, or Reliable - that tells you something meaningful without telling you a number. A match quality indicator on every suggested connection that reflects how well your context and intent aligns with theirs. And over time, simply better matches - people who are more likely to respond, more likely to follow through, and more likely to create genuine value for you.

The intelligence is there. It is just working for you - not on you.

The Three Tier Names Were Chosen With Care

We spent more time naming our trust tiers than we spent on many technical decisions. That is not vanity - it is because language shapes behaviour. And the wrong language would undermine everything.

We ruled out anything that sounded like a grade. Gold, Silver, Bronze. Platinum. Level 1, Level 2. These create hierarchies that make people feel ranked, which triggers the same score-gaming problem in a different costume.

We ruled out anything that sounded like a certification. Verified Professional. Authenticated. These imply a standard of legal or employment verification that no algorithm can honestly deliver.

What we landed on - Reliable, Trusted Node - are descriptions of a relationship between a person and their network. A Trusted Node is not better than someone who is Reliable. They are different stages of an ongoing story. Both are honest. Neither is a verdict.

The person who just joined Match It Up™ this week is not a low-trust user. They are a new user. The platform does not know them yet. That is a completely different thing, and the language has to reflect it.

Why This Matters Especially in India

We are building for Indian professionals first. And the Indian professional landscape has some specific dynamics that make trust design even more consequential than it might be elsewhere.

Professional networks in India are built on relationship capital that operates largely outside formal systems. A reference from the right person carries enormous weight. An introduction through a shared contact changes the entire dynamic of a cold conversation. The word of someone you trust is worth more than a profile page full of endorsements from strangers.

But that same landscape has also produced a professional culture where surface signals - college names, company logos, job titles - can be used to shortcut genuine evaluation. Where the pressure to appear credible sometimes outpaces the slower work of actually being credible.

A visible score in that environment is not neutral. It becomes another surface signal to optimise for. Another number to game. Another reason to measure yourself against someone else instead of focusing on the actual work.

What we are trying to build instead is a professional networking platform built for India that respects the way professional trust in India actually works - as something earned through consistent behaviour across real interactions, not awarded by an algorithm that watched you click things.

The Part That Keeps Our Team Honest

There is a harder version of this argument that I want to be transparent about. Hiding the score is also a form of accountability for us.

If we showed you your trust score and you thought it was wrong - and sometimes you would be right - we would have to defend an algorithm in public. We would have to explain why the system rated you at 61 instead of 78. We would have to field challenges, disputes, and appeals. We would be in the business of adjudicating trust, which is a very different business from helping you build it.

By keeping the score internal, we are committing to a different contract with you. We are saying: judge us by the quality of the connections we surface, not by a number we assign you. If the matches are good - if the people we introduce you to show up, follow through, and create real value - then the trust engine is working. If they are not, it is not.

That is a much more honest test.

What You Can Expect Instead

When you use Match It Up™, here is what the trust system actually looks like from your side.

Your profile will show a tier badge once you have enough history on the platform for us to say something meaningful. Before that, it shows nothing - because nothing honest can be said yet.

Every match we suggest will carry a signal about why we think this connection is worth your time - not a score, but a context. This person is working on something that aligns with your stated intent. This person has a consistent track record of following through on introductions in your domain.

Your connections will have a health indicator - a private signal visible only to you - that reflects whether a relationship is active or quietly fading. Not a grade. Not a score. A prompt. A gentle nudge that says: this person matters to your network and you have not spoken in a while.

The algorithm is working constantly. You will just never see it working. You will only see the results - and over time, if we have built this right, the results will speak clearly enough that you will not need to see the machinery behind them.
